Motivation to train in climate conditions

Posted: January 13, 2011 in Bicycle, Marathon, Triathlon

You see a ton of articles this time of year about slogging
it in the winter weather and beating the Seasonal Affective
Disorder S.A.D. depression. They teach you that you just have to
get out of bed, turn on the blue light for 30 minutes and stay the
course. What they don’t mention is when you leave the snow and ice
and head to the tropics! This seems nearly or more difficult for
those lucky enough to escape. Why? Well your telling yourself a
dessert won’t hurt, that alcohol is part of the experience of
relaxing, and prime rib is not something you’d have at home, etc.
Pretty soon you’re WAY over the limit and to top it off your
selling yourself excuses of why its ok to skip your workout today.
Today turns into tomorrow, and tomorrow turns into holy crap I’ve
fallen off the fitness wagon!!! Ok, so for most people this is a
typical vacation and exactly what they wanted, and that’s why they
are NOT reading this blog and getting fatter! Heres your
opportunity to try surfing, paddle-boarding, diving, whatever
you’ve been dying to try for years. Take a nature hike, throw the kids around the water, swim laps on the ocean. Look, just get up before the
kids (if you rented some or own a few) and that way the spouse
isn’t up your backside about abandoning him/her with the rug-rats.
Isn’t this exactly where you have dreamed of just going for a run
with no set distance, goals, agenda? How about a bike ride through
paradise? This is what we all really have our dreams set on right?
If it’s rainy, hit the weights, but again, your vacation is no
agenda for the workout… Just go for a while and take it in!!!!
Relax by putting the workout calendar aside and just get outside
and take off! You’ll remember what brought you into the sport in
the beginning. Mahalo!

Great post… luckily my hubby feels the same way as I do about trying new activites when we travel. Find running routes. Explore. It’s half the fun!
